Running and Pausing Automations
Once your workflow is built and configured in the Automation Builder, you can run, pause, or resume it directly from within Sendigram EMS. This control allows you to decide when your automations go live, temporarily stop them for editing or review, or restart them at any time.
Running an automation means that all configured triggers, actions, and rules are actively monitored and executed. Pausing stops all further activity until reactivated.
Before You Run an Automation
To ensure a smooth launch, your automation must meet all readiness requirements.
Sendigram performs an automatic pre-launch check when you click Run Automation.
Your automation must have:
- At least one configured trigger (to start the workflow).
- All required fields filled in for each element (e.g., email subjects, sender details).
- A verified sender domain that is not listed in any email blacklists.
- A valid and active IP address (shared or dedicated).
- Sufficient email balance (and auto top-up enabled if you want to prevent interruptions).
If any of these requirements are missing, the automation cannot start, and you'll see an error message explaining what needs to be fixed.
Launching an Automation
When your automation is ready, click Run Automation at the top of the Builder.
Depending on the system's validation check, one of two things will happen:
1. Successful Launch
If all configurations are correct, the automation starts running immediately. You'll see a success notification, and the automation status will change to Active in your My Automations list.
2. Launch Blocked
If something prevents the automation from starting, you'll see a specific error message describing the issue.
Common causes include:
- No active sender domain → The button "Run Automation" remains disabled. Open Domain Settings and verify or add a sender domain.
- Domain in blacklist → The system lists the blacklists found and suggests:
- Changing the sender domain.
- Contacting the blacklist administrator for removal.
- Expired dedicated IP address → If the IP tied to your automation has expired or will expire soon, the system will offer these solutions:
- Renew your dedicated IP address
- Use a shared IP address
- Insufficient email balance → Buy an additional email package and try again.
- Incomplete configuration → If one or more blocks have missing required parameters, the system highlights them on the canvas and shows the number of incomplete settings.
Once all issues are resolved, you can click Run Automation again to start.
Pausing an Automation
At any time, you can temporarily stop a running automation by clicking Pause Automation.
When paused:
- All ongoing email sending and scheduled actions are temporarily suspended.
- Contacts currently moving through the workflow will stop at their current step.
- The automation's status changes to Paused in your Automations list.
This is useful when:
- You need to update content or triggers.
- You want to stop sending during holidays or maintenance.
- You want to review results mid-campaign.
Resuming a Paused Automation
To resume a paused automation:
- Open the Automation Builder or My Automations list.
- Click Continue next to the paused automation.
The workflow resumes from the exact step where it was paused, and contacts continue moving through the sequence normally.
Stopping an Automation
An automation may stop automatically if it encounters a system-level issue — for example:
- The email balance is exhausted.
- The subscription plan has expired.
- A required sender domain or IP becomes invalid.
Stopped automations appear in the list with the Stopped status. To restart them, resolve the issue (e.g., top up balance, renew domain) and then click Run Automation again.
Editing After Launch
You can safely make edits to your automation even after launching it:
- Add or update actions and rules.
- Adjust delays or change email content.
- Pause before making significant edits to prevent inconsistencies.
Monitoring During Operation
Once the automation is running, you can monitor its performance directly in the Builder or from the Statistics section:
- Hover over email steps to view open, click, and deliverability rates.
- Compare metrics between emails using the detailed stats view.
- Use filters to sort or highlight key performance indicators.
